The gadget geek in me is jumping up and down, but so is the designer side of me. It’s very cool to read about and look at photos of past technology, crazy inventions, and (what were) futuristic ideas. At the same time, it is amazing to compare the designs from various dates such as 1874, 1940, 1972, and 2010. Design and the technology printing those designs was constantly changing as well. People were creating new ways to share ideas and information. Layouts changed from plain, standard column text to full page ads and articles with lots of photos and flexible regions of text.

I just recently read a post on Mashable entitled Film Released on YouTube, Theaters, DVD and TV for World Environment Day. The film was directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and produced by Luc Besson. Glenn Close narrates the 1.5 hour long video featuring high definition, aerial photography of over 60 countries to tell the story of our ecosystem and how humans have affected it.

I’m going to to watch the full video on YouTube the first chance I get. I looks incredibly interesting and the trailer itself is a work of art. For anyone interested, you can watch the trailer and full feature on YouTube for free.

WIRED Photo Contest

In the past, I’ve visited WIRED’s website here and there, but lately, I’ve been making it a point to visit more often. There’s so much more content that is explored solely on the web. The Gadget Lab for instance. Yeah, can’t help but visit that. There’s daily blog entries in all sorts of categories and just recenlty, I discovered quite a few photo contests that they hold. In the past they have had contests where the themes were Holga, Red, Self-Portrait, Night, Macro, Transportation and Black and White. Recently, they posted the results of their newest contest theme – Portraits.

The thing I love about the contest results is that they not only published a “Top 10 Wired.com Reader Portrait Photos, Decided by You,” but also, a “Top 10 Wired.com Reader Portrait Photos, Decided by Us.” Both set of photos was amazing. I loved the contrast though, between what the public chose and what the editors chose. The public chose photos, mostly of older men and children, whose faces covered most of the photo. Light seemed to be a deciding factor in many of the pictures. On the flipside, the WIRED editors chose pictures of “the underdog” as they said. The photos seemed more “ordinary” at first, but had their own special qualities. The angles were unique and each photo had it’s own appeal. Overall, both sets were great. I looked through the past contest results and they are equally as amazing. I think it’s great that just anyone can submit a photo. It’s such a good way to get readers interested. Take a look!
