google for good

Poverty levels continue to rise. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2007, 27.3 million people were in poverty, which rose from 36.5 million in 2006 ( US Census ). With this economic recession, there’s no doubt, these numbers will most likely soar. And that’s only the United States.

According to the site, Global Issues – Poverty Facts and Stats, “Almost half the world – over three billion people – live on less than $2.50 a day” and over 80% of the human population lives on under $10 a day. The stats continue for pages and pages.

So, what to do? In an age where google is now used commonly as a verb, you can type in any number of searches: ‘donate,’ ‘poverty,’ ‘funraisers,’ ‘charity,’ etc. I searched for ‘donate food.’ Here’s a couple of the results I got:

www.thehungersite.com – A sponsored site launched in 1999. It says that on average, over 220,000 people from around the world click on their “Give” button each day. That’s all you have to do, just click and their sponsors give money to various charities. If you’d like to do more, you can purchase items from their store. Why not? They have a “Click to Give – it’s FREE” button for Hunger, Breast Cancer, Child Health, Literacy, Rainforest, and Animal Rescue. Why wouldn’t you click the buttons? Nice.

www.feedingamerica.org – Formally Second Harvest. You have options to donate, advocate, or volunteer. It is “a network of more than 200 member food banks and food-resuce organizations” and serves “all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.”

www.freerice.com – I’ve written about this one before after seeing it in a magazine. “For each answer you get right, we donate 20 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger.” I tried it for awhile. Why wouldn’t you? Take 5 minutes and take a vocabulary quiz. The words are pretty basic. At the bottom it states, “144,018,640 grains of rice donated yesterday. Over 46 billion grains donated to date.”

There’s so many. But no matter the cause – poverty, animal rescue, literacy, etc. There’s some foundation out there that is accepting your donations, simply over the internet. Whether it’s food, item donations, or a simple click of the mouse. There’s plenty of ways to help. You just have to simply search for them. Try it out!
